Can You Use a Water Dispenser Without Electricity?

Water coolers are one of the most convenient appliances around, press a button and you get perfectly chilled or boiled water on demand. But most people think that you need a power source to operate. Whether it’s for outdoors, cutting energy costs, or emergency purposes, can you use a water dispenser without electricity?

Yes, in most cases, as long as you have the right kind of water dispenser for your requirements.

Different Water Dispenser Types (and how they work)

Water coolers come in several shapes and sizes. Some are fully electric, while others don’t need a power source at all.

1. Gravity-Fed Water Dispensers

These don’t require any electricity to operate. All they need is a large bottle of water (typically 11L or 19L) placed atop the unit. When you press the tap, gravity flows the water down through the tube into your glass.

What you can expect from these units:

  • Room temperature water only
  • No cooling or heating abilities

2. Mains-Fed Water Coolers (Plumbed-in)

Water dispensers that connect directly to your mains supply will almost always need electricity.

Why? Because most require power to run:

  • Their chilling system (so they can provide cold water)
  • Their heating element (to boil water)
  • The filter or UV steriliser
  • Without power, you typically can’t get water from these machines, even though they’re connected directly to your mains pipe.

3. Bottled Water Coolers

Bottled water coolers fall somewhere in between. They typically need electricity to chill and heat the water, but not always to dispense it. Without electricity, sometimes you can still use these to fill up a glass however you won’t get hot or cold water. Some models won’t work at all if they use electric pumps.

Why Would You Use a Bottled Water Dispenser?

You’ll find these handy in many situations such as outdoor events, emergency preparedness for power outages, off-grid locations and energy-saving initiatives in schools and the workplace. Really, anywhere you need a solid backup that doesn’t rely on electricity to function.

Room Temperature Benefits (and Limitations)

Bottled water dispensers are great, but they do come with trade-offs.

Benefits:

  • No electricity required
  • Inexpensive to run
  • Easy to install/setup and relocate them

Drawbacks:

  • No access to hot or cold water
  • Lacks features you get with electric models
  • Manual bottle changing

Electric models give you the benefits above (meaningless if there’s no power) plus hot and cold water, advanced features and automated water dispensing.

Do Bottle Filling Stations Need Electricity?

Often seen cropping up in offices, gyms, schools and other busy communal areas, bottle filling stations offer convenience and eco-friendliness like no other water solution can.

But do bottle-filling stations need electricity?

For the most part, yes. As the majority of bottle-filling stations will require mains power to operate as they are designed too. Created as part of an efficient hydration system, bottle filling stations offer features like sensor or touch-free operation, filtered and chilled water, and even UV sanitation technology.

Although there are bottle filling stations that don’t require electricity, these will operate much more similarly to a drinking fountain. Essentially watering hole-style bib taps connected directly to the mains water supply with the press of a button.

When would you use a bottle filling station?

Bottle-filling stations are great for busy settings where hydration and ease-of-use are top-of-mind. Perfect for offices and gyms, they help cut-down on plastic bottles and allow for a quick drink wherever you have one installed.

So if you have a lack of electricity access in your space, maybe due to being outdoors, at a temporary location, or even due to an emergency, you might want to reconsider.

Bottle filling stations are a fantastic solution to office hydration, just as long as you have the power for it.

Do I Need Electricity to Run a Water Dispenser?

If you want total reliability and don’t mind room temperature water, go for a bottled water dispenser. But, if you plan on cooling down on a hot day or brewing instant coffee, get an electric model. Just remember that it won’t work unless you have access to power.

Either way, both are solutions to making sure everyone stays hydrated.

At Thirsty Work, we know your office has unique needs and challenges. That’s why we offer both mains fed water coolers and bottled water coolers to suit your space.

In conclusion, don’t choose a water dispenser that needs electricity if you don’t have access to power. If you have any questions or are wondering which type of water dispenser would suit your environment best, do not hesitate to get in touch.
